When our SLT gave our ‘yes’ to begin Genesis Compass, we had been working together for about 18 months and were at the stage of launching our parish vision. Admittedly, it was a challenge for us to schedule the first four weekly meetings, but we were able to make it work, and after our first session of Module 1: Missional Prayer, we were all looking forward to meeting again the following week. Looking back, the timing of Genesis Compass was providential. Prior to starting it, our regular meetings had been focused on forming and articulating our vision. When we began Genesis Compass, we had transitioned to working on the strategy for how to launch and share that vision with our parish.

In our first session on Missional Prayer, we took a step back from the practical work of planning and had an opportunity to deepen our connections as a team. This wasn’t just another meeting about our parish; it was a chance to get to know each other better as individuals. Through this process, we developed a deeper appreciation for one another, recognizing each team member’s strengths and weaknesses and how each of us uniquely contributed to forming an effective, cohesive team. It also gave us time to reflect on what we had already achieved in recent months—a moment to celebrate God’s faithfulness and our shared progress.

One of the most significant insights we gained through learning about missional prayer was the reminder that the work of renewal ultimately belongs to the Holy Spirit. As parishioners and leaders, we are invited to cooperate with Him, rather than striving to accomplish it all on our own. This realization was both humbling and freeing. We discovered, both individually and collectively, that the work we were doing was a response to the Holy Spirit, who was already moving in our parish. We came to understand that God desires the renewal of our parish even more than we do. This truth has been a source of immense comfort and encouragement for us as a team. It reminds us that we are never alone on this journey of parish renewal; God is always with us, guiding and supporting us every step of the way.

We wholeheartedly encourage all leaders, priests, and SLTs—regardless of where they are in their journey or how long they have been serving—to participate in Genesis Compass. It has been invaluable for us as we navigate the path of parish renewal. For those who take part, it provides an opportunity to discover, or perhaps rediscover, the true and deeper reason they embarked on this journey in the first place. Genesis Compass is an invitation to be reminded of God’s presence and purpose in the work of renewal, which transforms not only parishes but also the leaders who serve them.

Emily
